Collingwood Takes Root!
Posted: 18 May 2010
To celebrate the opening of the new luxury Collingwood Bar at Longhirst Hall which is named after Morpeth's famous naval commander, Admiral Cuthbert Collingwood, a 5 year old English Oak sapling has been planted in the grounds of the Longhirst Estate in his honour.
On the few occasions Collingwood was released from his naval duties and allowed to spend time with his family at their home in Morpeth he enjoyed walking through the countryside scattering acorns wherever he went.
Longhirst Group Chief Executive, Stephen Cowell said "Collingwood wanted to ensure that England would always have enough Oak trees to build our fighting ships so we felt it would be appropriate to plant an oak sapling in his honour and to celebrate the opening of our new Collingwood Bar. He has always been one of my heroes and we have a full length portrait of him in display at Longhirst Hall.
